Navya's Walk Home: Spotting the Postbox
On Our Way Back Home · Discussion and Connection
Ask: 'Can you think of anyone in your neighbourhood who might not have a mobile phone — how might they send important news to a relative far away?' This surfaces the continued relevance of the post office without naming any moment to follow.
0-7Teacher invites students to share a time they sent or received something in the mail — a letter, a parcel, a greeting card — and draws out what they know about how it got from one place to another. Students share briefly in pairs before a few pairs report to the class.
7-18Students open Textbook p. 19 and read the section describing Navya's walk past the postbox and her conversation with grandfather about how a posted letter travels. Teacher prompts: What does the postman do after collecting letters? Where do letters go before they reach the right house? Students note two or three steps of the postal journey in their notebooks.
18-30Class discussion: How does the post office help people who live far apart stay in touch? Teacher guides students to articulate the idea that the post office is a shared community service — not just for one family but for everyone in the neighbourhood. The teacher invites students to think about elderly family members or neighbours who may rely on it.
30-40Students write two or three sentences in their notebooks answering the question from Textbook p. 19: 'How does the post office help people stay connected with each other?' Teacher circulates and asks one or two students to share their response aloud.
Competency (C-1.4). Explains the functioning of local institutions (family, school, bank/post office, market, and panchayat) in different forms (story, drawing, tabulating data, reports), and analyses their roles
Learning outcome. Students can explain how a local community institution serves people by connecting them across distance.
Navya drops a letter into the postbox on her way home. Before the letter reaches the person she wrote to, what does the postman do with it first?
- A Delivers it directly to the address written on the envelope
- B Gives it to the bank so it can be delivered with money orders
- C Sends it by mobile phone to the nearest post office
- D Takes it to the post office, where letters are sorted by region before being dispatched
D. Takes it to the post office, where letters are sorted by region before being dispatched
What each wrong option reveals
- A The student has not grasped the sorting and routing step — they think the postman acts as a direct courier, skipping the post office entirely.
- B The student has confused two distinct institutions — the post office and the bank — that both appeared in the chapter's neighbourhood walk.
- C The student has confused modern digital communication with the physical postal process, merging two separate systems.
