Holiday Stories, Four Lands
Back to School from Holidays · Discussion and Connection
Ask students whose families travel for work or weddings — they often have vivid memories of very different landscapes. Prompt: 'What is one thing about that place that surprised you or felt different from here?' Keep the mood celebratory; accuracy matters less than engagement at this opening unit.
0-7The teacher invites three or four volunteers to share one place they visited and one thing they noticed there — a smell, a colour, a food, a sound. Responses are collected on the board in a quick list, unordered and accepting of all answers.
7-18Students open Textbook p. 131. Each student writes the name of one place they visited (or one they have heard about from family) and something special about it. They then move to two or three classmates and ask the same question, filling the table in the textbook.
18-30Pairs share one similarity and one difference between the places their group recorded. The teacher collects these on the board, grouping responses loosely by land type — sandy, hilly, near water, flat — without yet naming the four landforms formally.
30-40The class looks at the board's emerging clusters. The teacher asks: what does it tell us about India that classmates who live in the same town have visited such different places? Students note one observation in their notebooks.
Competency (C-6.2). Presents observations and findings through different creative modes (drawing, diagram, poem, play, skit, oral and written expression)
Learning outcome. Students can share, compare, and record observations about places and environments using a structured table.
Chandni, Ritika, Gurpreet, and Nayan share their holiday experiences at the start of the chapter. Which pair correctly matches each child to the landform they visited?
- A Chandni — coastal; Ritika — desert; Gurpreet — plains; Nayan — mountains
- B Chandni — desert; Ritika — mountains; Gurpreet — coastal; Nayan — plains
- C Chandni — mountains; Ritika — plains; Gurpreet — desert; Nayan — coastal
- D Chandni — plains; Ritika — coastal; Gurpreet — mountains; Nayan — desert
A. Chandni — coastal; Ritika — desert; Gurpreet — plains; Nayan — mountains
What each wrong option reveals
- B The student has scrambled the pairings — placing Chandni in the desert and Ritika in the mountains — suggesting they did not read or remember the opening narrative carefully.
- C The student has inverted several pairings (mountains for Chandni, coastal for Nayan), indicating confusion between the four characters' regions.
- D The student has placed all four characters in incorrect landforms, suggesting the opening narrative was not engaged with at the level of matching individuals to places.
