Opening the Story: Pre-Reading Activation
Reading For Comprehension · comprehension-discussion
The story hinges on Grandpa's dignity being quietly undermined by his daughter; activating students' own relationships with elderly relatives gives the humour and tenderness of the story emotional weight before the first page is turned. The word-knowledge table at p.98 (task index 1) is left unanchored here; flag it as a self-study vocabulary warm-up before reading begins — students look up frail, shuddered, poky, forbid, pottering, and winced in a dictionary.
0–10Teacher opens with the premise of Vitamin-M — a fictional pill to improve old people's memories — and invites students to react. Brief whole-class discussion surfaces assumptions about ageing and memory before any text is read.
10–30Students individually complete the graphic organiser from Reflect and Respond (p.97) on caring for the elderly: why we should care, problems they face, possible causes, and ways to help. Pairs then share their charts and the class pools key ideas on the board.
30–45Students share a tradition, story, or recipe passed down by an elderly relative, using the Reflect and Respond prompt (p.97). Teacher draws connections across responses to surface the theme of intergenerational memory and dignity.
45–50Teacher previews the story's setting — a city flat, a rocking-chair grandfather, a worried daughter — and directs students to the pre-reading vocabulary table (p.98) as an independent warm-up they may begin at home.
Learning outcome. Student analyses character motivation, theme, and authorial purpose using prose as the vehicle.
Ravi decides to follow Grandpa secretly instead of going out with him. Which of the following best explains why?
- A He hopes to catch Grandpa eating foods that are banned at home, so that he can report him to his mother.
- B He is practising to become a detective, and Grandpa's walk gives him a suspect to trail.
- C He knows that going along would hurt Grandpa's pride, yet letting him go alone would break the word he gave his mother.
- D He wants to find out where Grandpa goes every morning, since Grandpa never tells the family.
C. He knows that going along would hurt Grandpa's pride, yet letting him go alone would break the word he gave his mother.
What each wrong option reveals
- A Reads Ravi as policing Grandpa; the banned foods come later, and Ravi follows to keep Grandpa from harm, not to report on him.
- B Carries the detective-book ending back into Ravi's motive; at the end he says he has not decided to be a detective.
- D Invents a habit the story never mentions; Grandpa says he is only walking to the corner shop for the Tamil newspaper.
