Drawing My Favourite Food

My Favourite Food · Create and Express

Ask: 'Does anyone know of a time when many different foods are made together at once — maybe at a festival or celebration?' This draws out the Chhappan Bhog tradition naturally. Group children so that different home backgrounds sit together, maximising the diversity of dishes that surface.

0-7The teacher invites children to close their eyes and think of a favourite homemade dish — what it looks like, smells like, tastes like. A few children share aloud before anyone draws, warming up the vocabulary of taste: sweet, sour, spicy, bitter.
7-22Each child opens Textbook p. 100 and draws at least two favourite homemade food dishes, labelling each with its name. Children who finish quickly are invited to add colour or details that show why the dish is special.
22-33Children share their drawings in pairs, explaining what taste each dish belongs to. The teacher walks the room, noting the variety of dishes that appear, and briefly introduces the idea that Indian festive traditions — like offering many foods together — celebrate this very variety of tastes.
33-40A few pairs share with the whole class. The teacher collects one or two observations on the board: the different taste words used and the different occasions the food is made for.
Assessment

Competency (C-6.2). Presents observations and findings through different creative modes (drawing, diagram, poem, play, skit, oral and written expression)

Learning outcome. Students can represent personal food knowledge through labelled drawings and connect dishes to taste categories.

Think of two of your favourite homemade foods. For each one, draw a picture and write its name. Then write one word that describes its taste — sweet, sour, spicy, or bitter.
