Pre-Reading Activation and First Reading of the Letters
Reading For Comprehension · shared-reading
The pre-reading table on honouring soldiers (p.180) works best when students share from personal experience — a family member in the forces, a local memorial, a newspaper story. Watch for students who conflate ‘celebrating victories’ with ‘honouring sacrifices’; the two columns carry different emotional registers, and surfacing that difference enriches the first reading of Soumya’s letter.
0–8Open with a brief whole-class conversation: ask students to name one person they consider brave and explain why, drawing out the idea of public homage. Record a few responses on the board to build shared vocabulary before reading.
8–18Introduce the pre-reading table from “Let us read” (p.180): students work in pairs to list three ways to celebrate victories and honour sacrifices. Take a quick paired exchange of responses before moving to the text.
18–38Read Soumya’s letter aloud together, teacher leading with students following in their textbooks (p.180–188). Pause at each of the four Chakras to let students visualise and name them; invite one or two observations about what strikes them most.
38–40Close by asking students to hold one question in mind as they reflect on the letter: what emotion does the Amar Jawan Jyoti evoke, and why?
Learning outcome. Student identifies specific information, infers meaning, and evaluates tone and purpose using an informational text as the vehicle.
