Postcards from India: A First Meeting with Shaana
Reading For Comprehension · shared-reading
This opening reading establishes Shaana's chatty, warm postcard voice; encourage students to notice her personality as well as the geography. A common difficulty is treating every postcard as equally weighted — steer attention toward details that reveal both landscape and character. Students who have not done the homework task can still participate fully because all textual work in this unit begins and ends here.
0–8Open with a quick paired exchange: ask students to tell their partner one place they have enjoyed visiting, who they went with, and one thing they learned. Take two or three brief whole-class sharings to warm up the room.
8–20Introduce Shaana and the postcard format. Read the first two or three postcards aloud, with students following in their textbooks (p.118–122), pausing to model how a reader notices a new geographical detail or a moment of surprise in Shaana's voice.
20–35Continue reading aloud through postcards covering Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Arunachal Pradesh (p.122–125). Invite students to share aloud one image or detail that struck them — snowballs at Thajiwas, the treehouse forest walk — and briefly discuss what kind of land each place seems to be.
35–40Close by asking students to name two geographical features Shaana has encountered so far, noting these on the board. Explain the homework task and ensure every student has located p.118 in the textbook before they leave.
Homework
Let us read (p.118): fill in six details about your own State or Union Territory.
Learning outcome. Student reads an informational travel text closely to infer feelings, identify evidence for stated observations, and interpret how a chatty personal register conveys both geographical knowledge and emotional growth.
In the postcard from the Sundarbans, Shaana writes that she sees crocodiles and a snake while boating, and then says she hopes they do not follow her home. Which of the following best describes the feeling Shaana most likely has when she writes this? A. deep scientific curiosity about reptiles found in wetlands B. playful nervousness — acknowledging real wildlife while lightening the mood C. genuine fear that the animals will actually travel with the family D. pride in spotting rare wildlife that her classmates have never seen
- A deep scientific curiosity about reptiles found in wetlands
- B genuine fear that the animals will actually travel with the family
- C playful nervousness — acknowledging real wildlife while lightening the mood
- D pride in spotting rare wildlife that her classmates have never seen
C. playful nervousness — acknowledging real wildlife while lightening the mood
What each wrong option reveals
- A Suggests the student reads Shaana's tone as factual and informational, missing the humour and personal register of the postcards.
- B Suggests a literal reading of the joke — the student does not recognise Shaana's characteristic habit of lightening a moment with a funny aside.
- D Introduces a competitive or boastful motive not present in Shaana's warm, inclusive voice anywhere in the postcards.
