Stepping into Puddleby: Pre-reading and First Read
Reading For Comprehension · shared-reading
This is the chapter's opening unit, so no prior content needs to be named. Watch for students conflating the Cat's-food-Man’s motivation with Dolittle’s own wish — the suggestion comes from outside, and the prose_summary is clear on this. Students who have not encountered a parrot as a speaking character may need a moment to settle into the story's comic tone before the pre-reading discussion takes off.
0–8Open the unit with a quick paired exchange: do you have a pet, and why or why not? After a brief share-out, introduce the story's world — Doctor Dolittle in the English town of Puddleby — and read the opening pages aloud with students following.
8–20Continue the teacher-led read-aloud through the Cat's-food-Man's visit and Polynesia's appearance at the windowsill, pausing at natural story breaks to check vocabulary and keep all students with the text.
20–30Pose the “Let us read” prompt from page 43 about animals and birds that talk: if you could speak to any animal or bird, who would it be and why? Students share briefly in pairs, then one or two pairs report to the class.
30–40Wrap up by asking students to recall one detail from the pages read today that surprised or amused them, and note it in their exercise books as a personal response to the story opening.
Learning outcome. Student locates and interprets information, infers character motivation, and evaluates authorial viewpoint using a prose narrative as the vehicle.
In the story, the Cat’s-food-Man visits Doctor Dolittle for a stomach-ache and makes a suggestion that changes the doctor’s career. Which of the following best describes what the Cat’s-food-Man believes about Dolittle?
- A Dolittle earns too little treating people and needs to find wealthier patients.
- B Dolittle has already learned animal languages from Polynesia.
- C Dolittle is bored with human medicine and is looking for a change.
- D Dolittle understands animals so well that he would make a far better veterinarian.
D. Dolittle understands animals so well that he would make a far better veterinarian.
What each wrong option reveals
- A Students choosing this introduce a financial motive that is absent from the text; the Cat’s-food-Man’s reasoning is about competence, not income.
- B Students choosing this confuse the sequence of events: Polynesia’s language lessons come after, not before, the Cat’s-food-Man’s visit.
- C Students choosing this conflate Dolittle’s later willingness to switch with the Cat’s-food-Man’s stated reason, which is about talent, not boredom.
