Before We Read: Feathered Friends and Space

Reading For Comprehension · shared-reading

The vocabulary warm-up with gapped words is a gentle entry point before the reading — completing "regulation" and "dietitian" prepares students for the station-life setting. A common difficulty is students reading at speed without noticing science-fiction details; deliberate pauses during the read-aloud let the zero-gravity imagery land. The pre-reading discussion on whether animals could accompany astronauts is not assessed here; it serves as an anticipation hook.

0–10Open the unit by inviting students to share what they know about birds kept as pets. Pose the pre-reading question from "Let us read" (p.205): who can a feathered friend be, and could one accompany astronauts to space? Take brief responses from pairs.
10–20Move to the vocabulary warm-up from "Let us read" (p.206). Students work in pairs inserting vowels into gapped words — regulation, forbid, fuse, abruptly, confess, dietitian. Elicit answers and write each completed word on the board with a quick pronunciation model.
20–38Read the opening section of "Feathered Friend" aloud — teacher-led with students following in their textbooks (p.205–209). Pause at key moments (Sven smuggling Claribel aboard, Claribel adapting to zero gravity) to check understanding with a quick whole-class question.
38–45Close with a brief pair-share: ask students to say in one sentence what surprised them most about the opening of the story. Take three or four responses to round off the reading.
Assessment

Learning outcome. Student infers character motivation and evaluates narrative evidence using a narrative text as the vehicle.

Which of the following best describes why Sven smuggled Claribel aboard the space station?

  • A He had been asked by the station commander to conduct an official animal experiment.
  • B He hoped Claribel would help him perform better at his construction work.
  • C He wanted company because space station life was lonely.
  • D He was curious to observe how a bird would behave in zero gravity.

D. He was curious to observe how a bird would behave in zero gravity.

What each wrong option reveals

  • A Confuses Sven's personal scientific curiosity with an official sanctioned experiment.
  • B Invents a practical motive for Claribel that the narrative does not support.
  • C Suggests the student is reading emotion into Sven's action without textual support.
