Before Reading: Bravery, Soldiers, and the Battle Ahead
Reading For Comprehension · comprehension-discussion
The before-reading discussions are the pedagogical entry point into the tribute narrative; they surface students' schema about soldiers and civic duty before the text shapes it. Watch for students who conflate ceremonial bravery with battlefield courage — the section's account of Badgam will complicate both ideas productively. Students who are reluctant to speak should be invited with open, low-stakes prompts rather than direct nomination.
0–8Open with a quick paired exchange on the Republic Day Parade — what students know about it and the awards given on the day. Draw out prior knowledge warmly without correcting or grading responses.
8–20Move to the group-of-four discussion: what qualities should a soldier have, and what message would students send to a soldier? Circulate and prompt quieter voices; take brief notes on the board of ideas that emerge.
20–35Teacher reads aloud the opening pages of the prose section (p.49–54), with students following in their textbooks. Pause at the description of Operation Gulmarg and Major Sharma's insistence on leading despite his plastered hand — invite a brief verbal reaction.
35–45Close with a short whole-class share-out: what one word would each student use to describe the kind of officer Major Sharma appears to be so far, and why? Accept responses orally; no written task.
Learning outcome. Student reads and interprets an informational prose tribute, sequencing events and drawing inferences about character, motivation, and legacy using the prose as the vehicle.
