Who Is a Scientist? Activating Prior Knowledge

Reading For Comprehension · comprehension-discussion

This unit opens the profile of Bibha Chowdhuri, India's first woman physicist; students arrive with no assumed prior exposure, so the word-web and image discussion are the entry points, not a warm-up to prior class work. Watch for students who conflate 'scientist' with stereotypically male traits — the word-web conversation is an opportunity to surface and gently challenge those assumptions. The task of discussing women scientists in the pictures (p.233) may be left as an optional home exploration for students who wish to research further.

0–8Open with a brief whole-class exchange: ask students to name one word they associate with the word 'scientist.' Collect responses on the board to seed the word web.
8–22Students work in pairs to complete the word web of qualities they associate with a scientist (Let us read, p.233). Pairs share with the class and the teacher builds a consolidated web on the board.
22–35Display or refer students to the pictures of women scientists in the textbook (p.233). In pairs, students discuss what they know about each and share one observation aloud.
35–45Teacher reads aloud the opening two paragraphs of the Bibha Chowdhuri profile (p.232–233) while students follow in their textbooks, pausing at unfamiliar names or places for brief clarification.
Assessment

Learning outcome. Student identifies and interprets key information, infers authorial intent, and evaluates perspective using an informational profile as the vehicle.

Read the following statements about Bibha Chowdhuri's life and career. Write True or False for each, and give a one-sentence reason drawn from her profile. 1. Bibha Chowdhuri conducted her doctoral research on cosmic rays under Patrick M.S. Blackett at the University of Manchester. 2. Erwin Schrödinger nominated Bibha Chowdhuri for the Nobel Prize in 1960. 3. She became the first woman faculty member at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, selected by Homi J. Bhabha. 4. The International Astronomical Union renamed a star in the constellation Leo as 'Bibha' in recognition of her legacy.
