Unlocking India's Mystifying Natural Wonders

Reading For Comprehension · shared-reading

This opening encounter with the text works best when students notice that the text moves from broad claim to individual profile — draw attention to that structure during shared reading. A common difficulty is distinguishing the seven phenomena by location; writing each name and state on the board as it appears in the reading gives students an anchor. The two remaining pre-reading activities (discussing personal wonders and completing the web chart fully) may be taken up as independent exploration.

0–10Display the pictures from the textbook on the board and invite students to sort them into natural and man-made wonders in pairs. Take brief share-outs and note categories on the board.
10–20Open the discussion to the whole class: which kind of wonder is more appealing and why? Encourage students to give reasons; record key descriptive words they use.
20–30Read aloud the opening paragraphs of 'Spectacular Wonders' (p.137–139) with students following in their textbooks, pausing to point out the seven phenomena listed.
30–40Continue shared reading through to the Lonar Crater Lake section (p.139–141), modelling how to identify the location, special feature, and descriptive language for each wonder.
40–45In groups of four, students begin the web-chart task — jotting words they associate with 'Nature's Power' drawn from the sections just read. Groups share two or three words aloud before the class closes.
