Heaviest to Lightest — comparing from experience
Lesson
Additional practice on school bag effort and heaviest book (Opening Q3–Q4, p.115) may be used as quick warm-up prompts if the class finishes early or assigned as written consolidation. A common error at this stage is confusing size with weight — children often rank a large light object as heavier; draw out examples where a small dense object outweighs a large hollow one.
0–8Children share what they carry to school and lift their bags; they talk about which feels heavier and why. The class then opens to Opening Q1, p.115 ("look at pictures of animals and write their names from heaviest to lightest....") — students rank animals and share reasoning.
8–20Opening Q2, p.115 ("write the name of the heaviest object in your home and explain how you know....") — each child writes and then a few share their reasoning aloud. The class notices that knowing the heaviest object often comes from lifting effort, not from reading a number.
20–30Opening Q5, p.115 ("what is your weight? How did you know? Write your answer....") — children reflect on how they found out their own weight and what kind of tool was needed.
30–40Fun at Vegetable Market, p.115 ("what do you think will be the weight of the half pumpkin? Write your estimate....") — children study the scale image, estimate, and justify their guess. The class compares estimates and the teacher records the range on the board.
Opening Q1, p.115 — Look at pictures of animals and write their names from heaviest to lightest.
A dog, a horse, and a sparrow are in a picture. Write their names in order from heaviest to lightest and give one reason for your order.
Horse, dog, sparrow — heaviest to lightest. A horse is a large farm animal much heavier than a dog, which is much heavier than a tiny bird like a sparrow.
