Counting Coconut Trees and Cups in Arrays
Lesson
Children who counted one-by-one for the tree grid benefit from being shown how to trace rows with a finger and count the row count separately. A common error is double-counting corner elements when moving between rows; invite children to describe the shape of one row before multiplying. Additional practice: Let Us Count, p.34 — laddoo and peda tray tasks T-4 and T-5 can be used for further grouping practice at the teacher's discretion.
0–10Children look at the top-view grid in Let Us Count (p.34) and count the coconut trees, first pointing to each tree and then regrouping by rows. Pairs share how they counted and compare totals.
10–22Children count the stacked cups in Let Us Count (p.34) ("Count the number of cups Muniamma has made....") by identifying a repeated column or row group. Each child writes the total and explains their grouping strategy aloud to a partner.
22–40Children work on Let Us Count (p.34) ("Gundappa plucked 5 coconuts from each tree...."), writing a number sentence that reflects skip-counting or repeated addition of 5s across the rows of the grid. Class discussion draws out how the grid structure helped.
Let Us Count, p.34 — Count the coconut trees in Gundappa's land from the top-view grid. Write the number. How do you know?
Mangoes are arranged in a rectangular tray. There are 4 rows and each row has 6 mangoes. Draw the arrangement in your notebook and write how many mangoes there are in total.
24 mangoes. The drawing shows 4 rows of 6 circles (or any symbol for mangoes). The child writes 24.
