Building Monuments with Blocks
Lesson
Keep the block handling open and exploratory — resist naming shapes too early; let children produce their own words first. A common early error is calling any tall block a 'cylinder', regardless of whether its faces are flat or curved; prompt children to run a finger across each face to distinguish. Consolidation of shape vocabulary grows naturally from the building conversation.
0–10Distribute wooden blocks (or unit cubes). Children handle the blocks freely, noting whether faces are flat or curved. Pose the prompt: 'Which building could you build with just these shapes?'
10–28Try to make a model Q1–Q5 + Discussion, p.1 ("Make a model of buildings using blocks; answer: what parts..."). Children build, then pair-share answers to each discussion question — parts visible, shapes chosen, what changes if one block is removed.
28–40Project Work, p.2 ("Observe a Qutub Minar model; answer what shape to use..."). Children examine the picture, discuss the shapes used for each section of the minar, and name what is common to all brick-shaped blocks.
Try to make a model Q1–Q5 + Discussion, p.1 — Make a model of buildings using blocks; answer: what parts shown, why selected, what shapes, how similar/different, what if one piece removed.
Look at a brick. It has flat faces and straight edges. Name the 3D shape that a brick is, and say how many flat faces it has.
A brick is a cuboid. It has 6 flat faces.
