Chapter 14 · Period 1 of 8 · 40 min

Which question works best for a survey?

Lesson

Students often assume any question works for a survey; the discussion should surface that open-ended questions produce answers that cannot be fairly counted against one another. Watch for students who say 'both questions are fine' — ask them to show how they would count the responses from Rohan's question fairly.

0–10Open the class with a quick show of hands: ask students to call out their favourite school subject freely. Record whatever they say on the board — some will name two subjects, some will give vague answers. Let the messiness sit visibly so students feel the problem of comparing unlike answers.
10–25Direct students to Look at the questions asked by Rohan and Anjali, p.203 ("Tick the question most appropriate for finding the 'most liked subject'...."). In pairs, students read both question wordings and tick their choice. Each pair then explains aloud: what kind of answer would Rohan's open question produce? what kind would Anjali's produce? Why does one make counting easier?
25–40Bring pairs together. Build a class consensus on the board: list the different types of answers each question would generate. Establish the principle — a survey question that asks for exactly one choice yields comparable, countable responses. Students record the agreed reason in their own words in their notebooks.
Assessment

Look at the questions asked by Rohan and Anjali, p.203 — Tick the question that is the most appropriate for finding the 'most liked subject'. Why do you think so? Discuss with your friends and teacher.

Priya wants to find out which sport is most popular in her class. She thinks of two questions to ask: Question 1 — 'Do you like any sports?' and Question 2 — 'Which one sport do you like the most?' Which question should Priya use, and why?

Priya should use Question 2. Question 2 asks for exactly one choice, so every answer can be counted and compared fairly. Question 1 gives a yes/no answer that does not tell which sport is most popular.
