Meeting the Poem — Read-Aloud and First Response
Reading · read-aloud
The poem's end-rhyme scheme (tall/fall, sing/anything, share/there, near/cheer, one/begun) creates a chant-like quality — lean into this in the read-aloud by slowing down at each line-end. Students new to the poem benefit from hearing it at least twice before any discussion; resist rushing to comprehension questions.
0–5Teacher opens the textbook to the poem on pp. 1–2 and invites students to look at any illustration while she reads the title aloud. Students predict what the poem might be about.
5–18Teacher reads the full poem aloud expressively, pausing after each couplet. Students listen with books open and follow along silently.
18–30Teacher reads the poem a second time, this time inviting students to join in on the rhyming words at the end of each line — an unhurried shared experience.
30–40Class discusses in brief: what did they notice about the rhyming words? Teacher writes the rhyme pairs (tall/fall, sing/anything) on the board and reads them together one more time chorally.
Learning outcome. Student infers meaning and identifies central ideas using a rhyming poem as the vehicle.
Read the lines on page 1 beginning “Together we stand, strong and tall”. Which word in the first two lines rhymes with 'tall'?
- A cheer
- B fall
- C share
- D sing
B. fall
What each wrong option reveals
- A Suggests the student scanned for a word that sounds pleasant rather than one that matches the specific couplet.
- C Reveals the student may have looked at a later stanza rather than the opening lines.
- D Students who choose this may be selecting any rhyming-sounding word from the poem without checking the first couplet.
