First Encounter with Hekko — Reading Aloud
Reading · read-aloud
This is students' first careful encounter with the informational text; the read-aloud models phrasing and the pronunciation of Nagaland terms such as Hekko, Aami, Aakho, and Joko. Students often confuse 'superiority' with a judgment about size; drawing attention to the folk-story context — a disagreement about who was stronger — helps ground the word.
0–5Teacher introduces the chapter title by writing 'Hekko' on the board and inviting students to guess what it might mean. Students share brief predictions about whether it might be a name, a place, or a game.
5–20Teacher reads the full text on pages 89–92 aloud at a measured pace, pausing briefly after the origin story paragraph and again after the rules section. Students follow in their textbooks.
20–30Let us Read (pp. 89–92): teacher revisits the four new words — declared, superiority, disagreement, surrender — writing each on the board, saying it aloud, and giving a brief contextual clue drawn from the text.
30–40Students re-read the text silently or with a partner, marking any sentence they found surprising. Two or three students share their sentences and explain briefly what surprised them.
Learning outcome. Student reads and demonstrates understanding of an informational text using a traditional folk game description as the vehicle.

What each wrong option reveals
- A Student may have confused 'Hekko' (the game's name) with the surrender word, and mixed up which team is Aakho.
- B Student knows the surrender word 'Joko' but has reversed the team identities, placing humans in the Aakho role.
- D Student has confused the title awarded to the strongest Aakho player ('Khotiba') with the in-game surrender word.
