First Encounter: Reading the Story Aloud
Reading · read-aloud
New words introduced through this reading include match, stacked, opponent, boundary, referee, dodged, teamwork, warriors, and cousin — display these on the board for reference. Students discovering that Lagori and Satoliya are the same game often react with surprise; use that moment to let brief reactions surface naturally. Keep the read-aloud moving so the match in Part II feels breathless.
0–5Introduce the chapter title and ask students what they know about traditional outdoor games. Invite one or two responses to warm up listening ears.
5–20Read Part I of the story aloud with expression, pausing at character voices for Ravi, Prakash, Guneet, Imran, and Deepa. Students follow in their textbooks (pp. 73–76).
20–35Continue the read-aloud through Part II (pp. 77–79), modelling the mounting excitement of the match. Pause briefly after Prakash places the seventh stone to let the drama land.
35–40Let us Read (pp. 73–79): ask students to recall two new words — stacked, referee — and say what each means from the story context before closing.
Learning outcome. Student retrieves and sequences key information using a dialogue-narrative story as the vehicle.
When Prakash says he has never heard of Lagori, which character explains the rules to him?
- A Deepa
- B Guneet
- C Imran
- D Ravi
C. Imran
What each wrong option reveals
- A Students choosing Deepa may recall that she is the captain who organises the match, not the one who explains the rules.
- B Students choosing Guneet may remember that Guneet proposed including Prakash but not who gave the explanation.
- D Students choosing Ravi may confuse his role as cousin and companion with the character who narrates the game rules.
