Folding and Cutting Letters to Find Symmetry
Lesson
A common error is cutting on the wrong edge — students cut the open edge instead of the fold, producing two separate halves rather than a complete letter. Prompt them to trace where the fold sits before cutting. Additional practice: Let Us Do T-2, p.136 (horizontal, vertical, and both lines of symmetry) can be assigned as independent sorting once T-1 cutouts are complete.
0–8Students fold a square sheet in half and then in quarters, crease the folds firmly, and discuss what the fold-line represents. The class names the fold-line a line of symmetry and recalls that the two halves match exactly when folded.
8–22Let Us Do, p.136 ("Which of E N X T K V O can be made by drawing half or quarter…."). Students fold paper, sketch half or a quarter of each letter on the folded edge, cut, and unfold. They draw the line(s) of symmetry directly on the unfolded letter and record which letters needed one fold and which needed two.
22–40Let Us Do, p.136 ("Use lines of symmetry to make paper cutouts of diya, boat, and other designs…."). Students choose two or three border designs, plan the fold, cut, and unfold to check whether the result matches the printed shape. Pairs compare their cutouts and identify the line of symmetry on each.
Let Us Do, p.136 — Which of the alphabet cutouts E N X T K V O can be made by drawing half or quarter of the letter? Draw lines of symmetry on the letters.
Which of these letters can be cut from a single sheet of paper folded once along a vertical line and once along a horizontal line (folded into quarters)?
- A E
- B H
- C N
- D V
B. H
What each wrong option reveals
- A E has a horizontal line of symmetry but not a vertical one, so only one fold works; the student has not checked both symmetries.
- C N has no line of symmetry, so it cannot be made by any fold-and-cut method; the student may be guessing rather than testing.
- D V has a vertical line of symmetry but not a horizontal one; the student has not checked for the second symmetry needed for a quarter-fold.
