My Body Is a Compass — Four Cardinal Directions

Lesson

A common error is swapping North and South when the child faces West instead of East; prompt the child to re-enact the sunrise stance before answering any direction question. The poem 'Four Little Chicks' is a strong memory anchor — let children revisit it whenever they seem uncertain about a direction label.

0–12Students stand and face the direction from which sunlight enters the classroom or, if indoors, face where the teacher says East is. The teacher leads a choral call-and-response: 'I face East — my left is North, my right is South, behind me is West.' Students repeat while holding out their arms. The poem 'Four Little Chicks' from the textbook is read aloud in unison, with children miming each direction the chicks call out.
12–28Students open their textbooks to p.171 and work through the Manu orientation task — p.171 ("Manu faces the rising Sun; fill: that direction is ___, left hand points..."). The teacher circulates and prompts: 'Stretch out your arms right now — which hand is North?' Students fill the blanks individually, then share answers with a neighbour and resolve any disagreement by physically re-enacting the body-compass stance.
28–40Class-wide discussion: the teacher poses quick oral questions — 'If you face West, what is on your right? What is behind you?' — and cold-calls several students. A volunteer draws the four-direction cross on the board and labels it. Students check their own completed task against the board and correct errors in pencil.
Assessment

p.171 — Manu faces the rising Sun; fill: that direction is ___, left hand points ___ direction, right hand points ___ direction; which way is west?

Reena stands facing the rising Sun. She stretches both arms out to the sides. Which direction does her right hand point?

  • A East
  • B North
  • C South
  • D West

C. South

What each wrong option reveals

  • A The student may think the hand points in the same direction as the face, not understanding that the body is the compass with arms pointing perpendicular to the facing direction.
  • B The student may have confused left and right, assigning North to the right hand instead of the left.
  • D The student may have reversed the rule completely, placing West on the right side.
