Reading Clocks and Counting Minutes Between Times
Lesson
Children often read clock faces correctly but subtract the numerals shown rather than counting forward, so 03:18 to 08:18 may yield 5 rather than 5 hours — prompt 'count on from 03:18' to catch this. When comparing mixed-unit times such as 1 hr 20 min and 1 hr 35 min, nudge children to compare the minutes part only once the hours are equal. The 12-hour/24-hour format tasks (Q6 and Q7, p.156) are available as additional practice for fast finishers or for consolidation.
0–8Children examine two clock faces showing Raghav's yoga times. Let us find out Q1–Q3, p.155 ("Read the two clock images showing Raghav's yoga start....") — pairs discuss what they notice about the minute hand positions and how they might find the gap between the two times.
8–25Children work through Let us find out Q4 (a)(b)(c), p.155 ("Find the time elapsed between given time periods....") in small groups, each group choosing their own counting strategy. Groups then share strategies with the class, the teacher drawing out multiple approaches on the board without prescribing one.
25–40Children read the painting-time table and answer Let us find out Q5 (a)(b), p.155 ("Using the table of painting times, identify who took longest...."). A quick class discussion — 'How did you decide which was longer: 1 hr 20 min or 1 hr 35 min?' — surfaces reasoning about comparing mixed-unit durations.
Let us find out Q4 (a)(b)(c), p.155 — Find the time elapsed between given time periods (01:15 p.m. to 01:42 p.m.; 03:18 p.m. to 08:18 p.m.; 09:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.) and share strategies.
Meena starts reading at 10:40 a.m. and stops at 11:15 a.m. How long did she read?
- A 1 hour 15 minutes
- B 25 minutes
- C 35 minutes
- D 45 minutes
C. 35 minutes
What each wrong option reveals
- A Child misread 11:15 as 1 hour 15 minutes past 10:00 without accounting for the 40-minute start.
- B Child subtracted 40 − 15 = 25, ignoring the hour change.
- D Child subtracted 40 from 11:25 or added an extra 10 minutes erroneously.
Also saved as 5 periods.
