Shape Codes, Arrays, and Clue Hunts

Lesson

T-2 and T-5 cover the same flexible-reasoning ground as T-1 and T-4; note them as additional practice: Let Us Think Q2 and Q5, p.70–71, for early finishers or homework. A common error here is checking only one or two equations for T-1 rather than verifying across all six simultaneously — prompt students to confirm every equation before declaring a shape's value final.

0–10Students work in pairs on Let Us Think Q1, p.70 ("The given shapes stand for numbers between 1 and 24...."). Each pair tests one equation at a time, substituting candidate values and checking whether all six equations hold simultaneously.
10–22Let Us Think Q3, p.70 ("A dairy has packed butter milk pouches in the following manner...."). Students sketch or physically arrange counters to model each rectangular arrangement and count the total by rows and columns, noticing they can skip-count rather than tally one by one.
22–40Let Us Think Q4, p.71 ("Which number am I? Use clues (a)–(h) and the 100-grid...."). Students cross off numbers from a 100-grid as each clue is read aloud, practising elimination reasoning. A quick share-out of the surviving number ends the unit.
Assessment

Let Us Think Q4, p.71 — Which number am I? Use clues (a)–(h) and the 100-grid to identify the two-digit number.

A two-digit number satisfies all of these clues: it is between 50 and 70; it is a multiple of 9; the sum of its digits is less than 12. Which number is it?

  • A 45
  • B 54
  • C 63
  • D 72

C. 63

What each wrong option reveals

  • A Student identified a multiple of 9 but did not apply the range clue (45 < 50).
  • B Student correctly finds 54 as a multiple of 9 in range but may not have checked whether another multiple also qualifies.
  • D Student chose the next multiple of 9 after 63 without checking the range boundary (72 > 70).
