Weave a Mat, Discover the Rule
Lesson
A common error is weaving every strip the same way (all over-under starting from the same side), producing a parallel-stripe rather than a checkerboard — pause after the first two strips and have students compare their mat to a neighbour's. Additional practice with progressively complex rules: Q3, p.93 (weave using the 4-row rule given) and Q4, p.93 (work out the steps for either shown weave design) can be assigned as follow-up work.
0–12Distribute coloured paper strips and a folded base sheet. Students work through Let us make paper mats, p.92 ("Fold coloured paper, cut slits, and weave 8 strips...."), physically weaving the alternating over-under sequence to produce a small mat.
12–25Hold up the 2-over-1-under mat from Q2, p.93 ("Figure out how the 2-over-1-under mat is woven...."). In pairs, students study the first two rows and write the row-by-row rule, then share and compare descriptions.
25–40Students transfer to grid paper for Let Us Try, p.93 ("Draw the given weave pattern on grid paper...."), completing the full grid design by applying the rule they have just articulated.
Let Us Try, p.93 — Draw the given weave pattern on grid paper; complete the rest of the grid to get the full design.
A student starts drawing a weave pattern on a grid using the rule 1-over-1-under. Row 1 starts: shaded, unshaded, shaded, unshaded, shaded. What is the correct sequence for Row 2?
- A Shaded, shaded, unshaded, unshaded, shaded
- B Shaded, unshaded, shaded, unshaded, shaded
- C Unshaded, shaded, unshaded, shaded, unshaded
- D Unshaded, unshaded, shaded, shaded, unshaded
C. Unshaded, shaded, unshaded, shaded, unshaded
What each wrong option reveals
- A The student has grouped the shaded and unshaded squares in pairs rather than alternating them singly.
- B The student has repeated Row 1 exactly, not seeing that the alternating rule shifts by one position each row.
- D The student has grouped unshaded and shaded in pairs, a similar pairing error in a different arrangement.
