Marks on the Wall: Counting One-to-One

Lesson

The goal here is one-to-one correspondence — every mark stands for exactly one animal — before any numeral is written. A common slip is grouping marks in fives without understanding why; accept all grouping styles at this stage and note the five-bar bundle as a useful convention during discussion, without enforcing it. Materials are scrap paper or slates; no prepared chart is needed.

0–10Read aloud the story of Deba and Deep to the class; pause at each point where a mark is made and invite children to mime the action of drawing a mark on a wall. Ask: how does one mark stand for one cow? Let children offer ideas freely.
10–25p.2 ("Help Hemant keep track of his 36 cows and 23 sheep....") — children use slate or scrap paper to make tally marks for 36 cows (going out) and then strike out marks as 36 cows return; repeat for 23 sheep. Pairs check each other's marks before moving on.
25–35Class discussion: how do we know the right number of cows came back? What happens if one mark is missed? Invite two or three children to explain their mark-sets to the class. Draw out the idea of one-to-one correspondence in the children's own words.
35–40Quick round: teacher calls a number (up to 15), children flash the matching tally on their slates. Celebrate quick, accurate responses.
Assessment

p.2 — Help Hemant keep track of his 36 cows and 23 sheep by making marks like Deba and Deep.

A farmer sends 14 goats out to graze in the morning. Draw tally marks in the box on p.2 to show all 14 goats leaving. Then draw the marks again with lines struck through them to show all 14 goats came back safely.

The student draws 14 tally marks (in any grouping) and then shows all 14 struck through or cancelled, with no mark left uncancelled.
