Nani Maa's Hidden-Seed Magic Trick

Lesson

Children often count all visible seeds from scratch rather than reasoning from the total; encourage the question 'What do we already know?' to redirect attention to the total as the starting point. The concrete act of hiding and revealing is essential before any written table work, so give the physical play its full unhurried space. A common slip is writing the visible count in the hidden column — a quick check of one row with seeds still on the table corrects this immediately.

0–8The teacher reveals Nani Maa's magic trick: show a small pile of seeds, hide some under a handkerchief, announce the total. Children guess the hidden count by thinking 'what do I add to what I see to reach the total?' Invite two or three children to try guessing aloud and share their reasoning.
8–22Children work in pairs with seeds and a handkerchief. One partner hides seeds while the other records total and visible counts on a small paper strip. They swap roles so both experience hiding and finding. Each pair aims to complete all six total-and-visible pairs from Let us Do, p.29 ("Perform the hidden-seed magic trick…").
22–33Pairs complete the six-row table in Let us Do, p.29 ("Perform the hidden-seed magic trick…") by writing the hidden count beside each pair. The teacher circulates, prompting: 'How did you figure out that number?' Children are encouraged to say the number sentence aloud: 'I saw 4, total is 9, so 5 are hiding.'
33–40Brief whole-class share: a volunteer reads one row of their table, and the class checks by acting it out. The teacher draws attention to the pattern — total, visible, and hidden form a tight trio — and names the idea of a missing addend without formal vocabulary pressure.
Assessment

Let us Do, p.29 — Perform the hidden-seed magic trick with friends; write the number of hidden seeds in the table for six total-and-visible pairs.

There are 11 seeds in all. You can see 4 seeds on the table. How many seeds are hiding under the cloth? Show how you know.

7 seeds are hiding. The child should show 4 + 7 = 11 or 11 – 4 = 7.
