Building July: Filling a Real Calendar Grid

Lesson

Children commonly confuse the day a month starts with the day they place first in the grid — reinforce that the column must match the day name at the top. The activity of counting Sundays and listing Thursdays consolidates that they can navigate a grid they have built themselves. Linking the family story to a real blank grid gives the calendar immediate meaning.

0–10Open with the story of a family finding July missing from their calendar. Distribute a blank July 2024 grid and discuss: what do students already know about July — where it falls, how many days? Children identify that July has 31 days and that July 1, 2024 falls on a Monday, then begin filling the grid.
10–25Let us Do, p.166 ("Make the calendar for July 2024 by filling the blank grid.") Children work in pairs, placing each date in the correct column for its day. The teacher circulates, asking: 'How do you know Monday comes first this week?' Children complete the full grid.
25–40Let us Do Q1, p.166 ("Observe the July month and write the number of Sundays.") and Let us Do Q2, p.166 ("Write the dates in July that are Thursdays.") Children scan their completed grid, circle each Sunday, count them, and then list Thursday dates. Pairs compare answers and discuss any disagreements before a quick whole-class check.
