Bundling Hundreds: Add with Blocks and Jumps

Lesson

Students often write the regrouped ten as a separate digit rather than carrying it into the hundreds column — watch for this and return to the block model to show the physical exchange. The snake/caterpillar chain reinforces the ones-then-tens sequence in a low-stakes format before word problems appear.

0–10Open with the Kishan nursery story from the chapter. Pose the question: how do we add 364 plants and 52 more? Students talk in pairs about what they already know about hundreds, tens, and ones. Draw a blank HTO box on the board together.
10–25Using Dienes blocks (or drawn squares/rods/dots), model 364 + 52 on the HTO table. Combine the tens column to get 11 tens; guide students to see that 10 tens make a new hundred. Record the regrouped result. Show the number-line +10 jumps as a parallel pictorial path for the same addition.
25–40p.150 ("Complete snake/caterpillar chains: Add 2 from 334; Add 5....") Students work independently on the chain warm-up, applying the same place-value thinking practised with blocks. Walk the room; prompt students to name which digit changes when they add ones.
Assessment

p.150 — Complete snake/caterpillar chains: Add 2 from 334; Add 5 from 375; Subtract 5 from 387.

Start at 375 and add 5. What number do you reach?

  • A 370
  • B 380
  • C 385
  • D 475

B. 380

What each wrong option reveals

  • A The student subtracted 5 instead of adding, giving 370.
  • C The student added correctly in the ones but forgot to carry the exchange into the tens column, writing 385.
  • D The student added 5 to the hundreds digit instead of the ones, giving 475.
