From Festive Counting to Repeated Addition

Lesson

Children who confuse counting objects scattered across a picture with systematic grouping benefit from a finger-trace strategy — touch each item once and mark it. When bridging from repeated addition to the × sign, a common error is writing the number of groups and the group size in the wrong order; have students say 'five groups of two' aloud before writing 5×2.

0–10Students open to the Raksha Bandhan scene and work on Find and count, p.82 ("find and count leaves, glasses, pomegranate, flowers...."), pointing to each item and writing the count beside it. The teacher circulates, asking children to say their counting aloud so the class builds a shared answer.
10–25The teacher draws attention to the rakhi-making picture. Students work through How many threads, flowers and beads, p.83 ("for 5 rakhis, find how many threads, flowers...."), first writing repeated addition sentences (1+1+1+1+1, 2+2+2+2+2, 4+4+4+4+4) and then reading the compact form — 5×1, 5×2, 5×4 — that the book introduces.
25–40Pairs share their repeated-addition chains with the class. The teacher writes the two notations side by side on the board and invites students to say why both give the same answer, anchoring the idea that multiplication is a shorter way of recording equal groups.
Assessment

Find and count, p.82 — Find and count the number of each of these objects (leaves, glasses, pomegranate, flowers) and write.

A stall at the festival has 3 rows of diyas. Each row has 6 diyas. Draw the diyas as dots in your notebook and write how many there are in all.

18 diyas in all. The student draws 3 rows of 6 dots and counts 18.
