Counting the Mela: Guessing and Grouping in Tens
Lesson
The grouping-in-tens strategy is the conceptual anchor here — children who count one-by-one often miscount beyond 200, so insist on circling groups before counting. A common error is stopping at 290 and writing '290' rather than continuing the count to reach 298 or 300; ask 'How many more to reach the next hundred?' to catch this. Additional practice: Guess p.65 (toffees) and Count and check p.65 may be used as homework or extension.
0–8Open the mela picture together. Each child writes a private guess for Can you make a guess?, p.64 ("Guess the number of triangular torans in the mela picture...."). Invite a few guesses aloud — celebrate the range without revealing the answer.
8–18Children work in pairs on Now find out, p.64 ("Count all the triangular torans by grouping in tens...."). Each pair circles groups of ten on the picture and records a running total. Pairs share counts; the class agrees on the total.
18–26Repeat the guess-then-count rhythm with Guess, p.65 ("Guess how many bangles there are....") followed by Try counting, p.65 ("Count the total number of bangles using Teji's counting strategy...."). Children use the grouping-in-tens method they just practised.
26–40Class works through Let us Do, p.65 ("How many more triangles to make 300? How many bangles less than 300? Which is more...."). Children reason aloud: how many steps from 280 to 300, from 250 to 300. Toffee-counting tasks (Guess p.65 and Count and check p.65) are noted as additional practice for early finishers.
Now find out, p.64 — Count all the triangular torans by grouping in tens to verify the total.
There are 23 groups of 10 bangles and 4 loose bangles. How many bangles are there in all? Write the total and explain how you counted.
234 bangles. 23 groups of 10 = 230, plus 4 loose = 234.
