Party Measures: Whose Hand Span Wins?
Lesson
The central idea of this unit is that informal units (hand spans, footsteps) give different results because they vary from person to person — this is the problem the chapter is built to solve. Watch for children who assume everyone's hand span is the same; prompt them to compare their own span with a neighbour's before measuring. Additional practice with the same reasoning: Let us Do Q5–Q7, p.128.
0–8Open the party picture together. Let us Do Q1, p.128 ("discuss what various activities are shown....") — children name what each person is doing to measure something, in their own words.
8–18Let us Do Q2, p.128 ("discuss how Shelly finds the height of the door....") — children mime using hand spans up a wall, then Let us Do Q3, p.128 ("will Leena and Adi get the same measurement....") — pairs place their hand spans side by side to feel the difference.
18–30Children actually span the desk or a book with their own hands and record a count; two or three volunteers share their counts and notice they differ. The class discusses why.
30–40Let us Do Q4, p.128 ("circle the child with the longest ponytail....") — children look closely at the picture and circle their answer, then explain to a partner how they decided.
Let us Do Q3, p.128 — Will Leena and Adi get the same measurement of the table using their hand spans? Discuss.
Ajay measures the width of a door using his hand span and gets 6 hand spans. Neha measures the same door and gets 8 hand spans. They both measured carefully and did not make any mistakes. Explain why they got different answers.
Ajay and Neha have different-sized hand spans, so the same door width takes more of Neha's hand spans (which are smaller) and fewer of Ajay's (which are larger).
