Chapter 1 · Period 1 of 6 · 40 min

Picture Walk — Duck, Hen and the Village Fair

Reading · picture-reading

The four pictures carry the whole story without needing words first — let observation lead before dialogue is introduced. A common pitfall is moving too quickly past the stream picture; pause here and let students notice the ducklings carrying the chicks, because that detail drives all the discussion in later work.

0–8Teacher walks students through the four illustrations one by one, asking what they see in each picture — who is there, where they are going, what is happening at the stream.
8–22Picture Reading — "guided picture walk through all four illustrations." Teacher reads aloud the speech-bubble dialogue from the textbook as each character speaks, keeping pace with the pictures.
22–34Students look at the pictures again in pairs and take turns pointing to each scene and saying in one sentence what is happening — the duck inviting the hen, the journey, the stream, the crossing.
34–40Whole class shares: teacher asks, "Which picture surprised you most?" Students respond briefly in one sentence each. Teacher affirms and links all four pictures as one connected story.
Assessment

Learning outcome. Student observes and sequences visual narrative events using a picture story as the vehicle.

Look at the picture story on Textbook pages 1–2. The events below are jumbled. Choose the option that puts them in the correct order.

  • 1. The ducklings carry the chicks across the stream.
  • 2. The duck invites the hen to the village fair.
  • 3. The hen says she cannot swim.
  • 4. They all reach the stream.
  • A 1 → 2 → 3 → 4
  • B 2 → 4 → 3 → 1
  • C 2 → 3 → 4 → 1
  • D 4 → 2 → 1 → 3

B. 2 → 4 → 3 → 1

What each wrong option reveals

  • A Students who choose this may think the crossing happened before the journey began, showing they have not followed the picture sequence.
  • C Reveals the student has the beginning right but placed the hen's worry before the group reaches the stream — a small but meaningful sequencing slip.
  • D Suggests the student started from the stream picture and worked backwards, missing the story's opening invitation entirely.
