Chapter 9 · Period 1 of 9 · 40 min
First Reading — Meena, the Stream, and the Boats
Reading · read-aloud
This is the students' first full encounter with the story, so pace the read-aloud slowly enough to let the illustrations guide meaning. The shift from Meena's anger to her generosity at the end often surprises students — pause there and let the silence land before moving on.
0–3Teacher invites students to look at the chapter title and illustration. Students say what they see — a stream, a bridge, a child — before a word is read.
3–18Teacher reads the story aloud from Textbook pp. 56–58, using a slightly different voice for Meena and the boy. Students listen with books open and follow along.
18–25Shared re-reading: teacher and students read key dialogue passages together — Meena's angry shout and the boy's admission — chorally and with feeling.
25–35Let us read + Let us think — A.1 ("What was Meena playing with?"): students answer orally in a full sentence; teacher accepts and repeats the answer clearly for the class.
35–40Teacher briefly recaps: Meena, the stream, the paper boats, and a naughty boy. Students close books and whisper one thing they remember to a neighbour.
