Hearing and Reading the Poem Aloud
Reading · read-aloud
This is students' first encounter with the poem, so prioritise warm, expressive reading over accuracy. The rhyme scheme (bright/night, still/hill, sleep/peep) is the natural hook for ear-training; linger there. Students who are shy may mouth the words during choral rounds — that is full participation at this stage.
0–8Teacher reads the poem 'Night' aloud twice from the textbook, using natural expression and pausing at each rhyme pair. Students listen with books closed, attending to sound and rhythm.
8–18Students open textbooks to pp.104–105. Teacher reads one stanza at a time; class repeats each line as an echo, then the stanza as a whole.
18–28Let us recite — whole-class choral reading of the full poem. Teacher leads two rounds: first at a measured pace, then at a slightly brisker pace for fluency.
28–36Teacher invites four or five volunteers to read one stanza each aloud to the class, coaching clear pronunciation of rhyming pairs (bright/night, still/hill, sleep/peep).
36–40Class closes books and recites together from memory as much of the poem as they can. Teacher supplies any forgotten lines without correction of individuals.
Learning outcome. Student reads aloud and recites a poem with rhythm and rhyme using a lyrical poem as the vehicle.
Read the lines on page 104 beginning "The sun that shines all day so bright". Which pair of words rhymes in those two lines?
- A bright and night
- B day and night
- C shines and bright
- D sun and shines
A. bright and night
What each wrong option reveals
- B Student recognises 'night' correctly but pairs it with 'day' by topic association rather than sound.
- C Student may be listening for repeated sounds rather than end-rhyme.
- D Student may be matching words that go together in meaning rather than sound.
