Picture Walk — Discovering the Outdoor Play Scene
Reading · picture-reading
Children at this level often count all figures together without sorting by category; encourage them to point to each figure and place it in one group before writing. The picture on pp.36–37 is large and detailed — give the class adequate time to scan each corner before the counting task begins.
0–10Teacher conducts an unhurried picture walk through the full-page outdoor scene on pp.36–37, pointing to each group in turn — boys crouching with marbles, the girl on the hopscotch grid, the kite flyer — and eliciting one-word observations from the class.
10–22Teacher reads aloud the picture-description text on p.38, pausing at each named activity so children can locate it in the picture.
22–40Look at the picture and answer (pp.37–38): children work individually to count and write the numbers of children, girls, boys, women, and animals in the blanks provided. Teacher circulates to support counting.
Learning outcome. Student observes, identifies and interprets visual details using a picture narrative as the vehicle.
Look at the outdoor play scene on Textbook pages 36–37. Which of the following best describes what the old man in the picture is doing?
- A He is flying the kite.
- B He is playing marbles with the boys.
- C He is sitting on the doorstep making a garland.
- D He is standing and watching the children play.
D. He is standing and watching the children play.
What each wrong option reveals
- A The child may have noticed the kite overhead and assumed the old man is the one flying it.
- B The child may have grouped the old man with the boys nearest to him in the picture.
- C The child may have confused the old man's standing posture with the women seated on the doorstep.
