Stepping into the Garden — First Read and Explore
Reading · read-aloud
The poem's three stanzas share an identical opening refrain; students often race past it — slow down to help them notice the repeated lines before moving into the action verbs. All three questions in the task are answered within the poem itself, so encourage children to look back at the text before writing.
0–10Teacher reads the poem aloud twice from the textbook (pp.39–40), pointing to each stanza. Students listen with books open and follow the text with their finger.
10–22Shared read-aloud: the class reads the poem together with the teacher, one stanza at a time. The teacher pauses after each stanza to invite brief oral observations about the action words in it.
22–40Let us think — A (p.41): students answer all three questions orally in pairs first, then write their answers independently in their exercise books. Teacher circulates and offers brief feedback.
Learning outcome. Student locates and retrieves explicit information using a poem as the vehicle.
Read the lines on page 39 beginning "I bounce my ball". Which of the following best describes what the child does with the ball in the poem?
- A The child bounces, throws, and catches the ball.
- B The child kicks, rolls, and spins the ball.
- C The child runs, skips, and swings the ball.
- D The child tugs, pulls, and flies the ball.
A. The child bounces, throws, and catches the ball.
What each wrong option reveals
- B The student may be drawing on general ball-game knowledge rather than the poem's specific verbs.
- C The student has taken the friends-stanza action verbs and applied them to the ball stanza.
- D The student has confused the kite-action verbs with the ball-action verbs — both appear in the poem but in different stanzas.
